Biography

A music teacher and choirmaster at the St-Frédéric Basilica in Drummondville, Nicolas is invited to various projects as a composer, copyist, orchestrator, or saxophonist. He is also the author of the book Une musique à ta portée devoted to musical notation. Since 2023, he has playing a series of saxophone and organ concerts with Francis Gagnon in various churches and concert halls across the province of Quebec.

 

Raised in a family of professional musicians, Nicolas holds a first DEC in Jazz Composition and Arrangement and a second in Saxophone Performance (Cégep Drummond), a Bachelor's degree in Musical Writing (Université de Montréal), a Bachelor's degree in Music Teaching and a DESS in Film Music (Université du Québec à Montréal). During his training, he worked on the saxophone with Pierre Daigneault, Billy Boufard and Mathieu Gaulin; he worked on musical composition with Denis Mailloux and François-Hugues Leclerc.

 

In 2005, he released the album Le chapelet enchanté following a commission to set the prayers of the rosary to music. The album traveled to Pope Benedict XVI. For the 2007-2008 season, he was the choirmaster and accompanying pianist for the Euphonie choir in Drummondville. In 2014, he won first prize in the 3rd edition of the composition competition organized by the Ensemble vocal Polymnie for his piece Lève-toi… et viens! In June 2015, the Vocalys ensemble with Raymond Perrin as music conductor premiered his oratorio Virgo Fidei. From 2017 to 2020, he was the conductor of the intergenerational choir and the adult choir and saxophone teacher at Le Jardin Musical school in Longueuil. In 2021, the Alliance chorale du Québec commissioned a music to represent the Centre-du-Québec region as part of the project "Au chœur des régions". The music was premiered on December 12, 2021 by the choir Les Gospangels . In 2021, pianist Marie-Pierre Labelle commissioned a piano music, Contemplation au bord du St-Laurent, which she recorded on her album Hommage. Since 2020, he has been a music teacher in Drummondville. In 2022, he became the choirmaster of the Choeur St-Frédéric at the St-Frédéric Basilica in Drummondville. Since 2023, he has playing a series of saxophone and organ concerts with Francis Gagnon in various churches and concert halls in the province of Quebec. In 2024, he published the book Une musique à ta portée, devoted to musical notation. In 2025, he became an associate-composer at the Canadian Music Centre .
